Betty Shelton

Betty Shelton was born and raised in Burleson, Texas and is
a strong advocate for the City and its residents. She served
on City Parks Board and the Mediation Board for the police and the
city. She was on the Volunteer Retirement Board for the Fire
Department and was named Volunteer of the Year for the City in
1995. She initiated a project with the city of Burleson to
maintain yards for senior adults who were no longer able to do the
work. She is credited with helping organize the D.A.R.E.
program in the schools and helped raise funds until the program
could be totally funded by the school and the city. Tireless
efforts at the Harvest House were under her direction for over
twelve years to provide food, clothing and toys for needy
families. She initiated the first Motorcycle Toy Run in 2003
with great success. She initiated Angel Concerts in December
and raised over $300,000. She is co-founder for the "Heart
for the Kids.'
Betty served on the C.E.I.C. boards for Crossroads Learning Center
and Pauline Hughes Middle School. She was a supervisor for
the Adult Community Hours Program and helped organize the
Ex-Students Organization. She served two terms on the
Johnson County Child Protective Board. She has also been
involved with the Chamber of Commerce as a mentor in the
elementary reading programs, Good Life Days and Honeyfest
activities, annual auctions, Miss Burleson pageant and served on
the Convention and Visitors Board.
These are only part of the reason she was was chosen as the Athena
winner in 2003. She and a friend started the Optimist Club
in 1985. She has been a leader in proposing many
activities, always directed toward helping others. She has a
heart that involves helping those in need. She loves
children and the seniors and has a special interest in seeing that
the Veterans are not forgotten. She spearheaded the memorial
and "Bricks for Veterans" in Olde Town Burleson. She in now
involved in bringing and Eagle Statue to the site.
Betty has been married to Robert Shelton for thirty-six years.
Together, they have five sons, seventeen grandchildren, and ten
great-grandchildren. She is the receptionist for the
Heritage Retirement Center, a position she has held for the past
four years. |
